The Supermarine Spitfire is a single-seat fighter used by the Royal Air Force and other Allied countries during World World War II and through the 1950s. The first prototype first flew on March 5, 1936. The Spitfire was designed and produced by Supermarine subsidiary, Vickers-Armstrongs. The Spitfire saw service in World War II and in most theaters of war, in several roles and in many different variants. The Spitfire is often compared to its main adversary, the Bf 109, both were among the finest fighters at their time. The Spitfire Mk V was the most common type of Supermarine Spitfire with 6,487 built. One of the factors which contributed to the success of the Spitfire was that every single aircraft was flight tested before delivery. A total of 20,351 examples f all variants were built, including two-seat trainers and some Spitfires remained in service well into the 1950s. The Spitfire was the only British fighter aircraft to have continuous production before, during and after the Second World War.
