This jet established Messerchmitt's place in aviation history as the world’s first turbo jet fighter to enter combat! In 1938-1942 the new gas turbine engines developed by BMW saw service in ME 262’s. German leaders wanted this jet to serve as a bomber as well as a fighter and held production up on this plane. Top speed for the ME 262 was 540 mph and it had a range of 652 miles. It was armed with four 30 mm MK108 cannons in the nose area.
