The Bell P-63 Kingcobra is an American fighter aircraft developed by Bell Aircraft in World War II. It was an improved version of the P-39 Airacobra and was designed as a ground-support/fighter-bomber from the beginning. The P-63 was not accepted for combat use by the USAAF, but it was adopted by the Soviet Air Force. Free French forces obtained 300 Kingcobra and the French Armee de l'Aire received 114 P-63Cs at the end of World War II. They served in combat as ground-attack aircraft in the French war in Indochina, being finally retired in 1951 . The US Army Air Force never used the P-63 in combat, but some were used for fighter training.
