In 1938, the Mosquito was designed as a reconnaissance aircraft, an unarmed bomber that flew so high and fast that armament would be superfluous. The Mosquito had the maneuverability of a fighter yet this bomber could also fly 400 mph. The plywood bomber had a range of 1650 miles. It was armed with four 20 mm cannons and four 7.7 mm machine guns in the nose and could carry 2000 lbs. of bombs or 1000 lbs. of bombs and eight rockets.
