The Heinkel He 162 Volksjager ("People's Fighter") was a German single-engine jet-powered fighter aircraft operated by the Luftwaffe in World War II. It was designed and built quickly and made primarily of wood as metals were in very short supply. The plane was to be flown by new pilots of the Hitler Youth, but as it turned out the plane was difficult to fly, requiring experienced pilots. The He 162 was underpowered and had the worst safety record of all the early jet aircraft. It’s been said that the He 162 inflicted more casualties on German pilots than the enemy.
