The General Motors FM-2 was based on Grumman's XF4F-8 prototype which was optimized for small-carrier operations. It had a more powerful 1,350 hp (1,010 kW) Wright R-1820-56 engine, and a taller tail to cope with engine torque. The "White 29" from VC-93 was flown by Lt. Hatherly Foster III, while based aboard the USS Petrof Bay (CVE-80) in April 1945.
