This Liberator is known to have survived the war to be sent back to the USA for scrapping, but because of its colorful artwork it was kept hoping to be saved. It languished in the desert sand, devoid of its engines and thus tail-heavy with its nose in the air, but with no takers, it was salvaged and melted down as were most of the B-17s and B-24s. The Collins Foundation acquired and restored the only flyable B24J left in the world and afforded the ultimate honor to Sgt Bartigian and to the men of the Pacific-based USAAFs by having the aircraft painted as The Dragon and His Tail.
